Corrida de Cavalos—A Commitment to Legacy and Tradition

The City of Calaca’s Festival of Horses, widely recognized as Corrida de Cavalos Cidade de Calaca, is an annual celebration wherein harness racing enthusiasts from the host city, neighboring municipalities, Bulacan, Pampanga, Cavite, Manila, Laguna, and other provinces in Luzon come together to commemorate a tradition that originates from a devotion to St. Raphael the Archangel, the Patron Saint of Calaca.

Historically, every Holy Wednesday of the Lenten Season, churchgoers from nearby towns would come to Calaca to express their devotion to St. Raphael and their mode of transport then was by riding horses. After the mass, these horse enthusiasts would mingle with one another until they became acquaintances. Horse trading and friendly matches would ensue, thus igniting this tradition that has now been passed down to generations.

Varied sizes, colors, and names of horses with their eye-catching nameplates, harnesses, and hopples adorned the Dacanlao National Highway on March 27, 2025. 50 pairs of horses took part in friendly exhibition runs. The awe and merriment were clear in all the spectators’ faces, especially when the friendly matches were too close to call. The collective excitement of everyone radiated the stretch of the highway as cheers erupted for the participating horses.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) Region IV-A Director, Ms. Marites Castro, also graced the event and gave her heartfelt appreciation of the unique cultural activity in Calaca City, Batangas that goes back to the 1840s. She mentioned that in the years to come, Corrida de Cavalos Cidade de Calaca would become even bigger and grander through the collaboration between the DOT Regional Office and the Office of the City Tourism Officer of Calaca.

Truly, this tradition strengthens the legacy of harness racing among locals of Calaca and from other places in Luzon, as well. Corrida de Cavalos is one of the most loved festivities in the City, bringing in a large number of tourists in this one-day program.
